This episode starts off interesting in the stationary store. There is a weird transition to the credits and the opening doesn’t really flow into the rest.
Some more character development and a new character.
The shock of Rory not doing well in school with a level 4 meltdown and a Mussolini reference!
Hold onto your hats!
Characters
In
this episode, we meet a new friend in the Gilmore world. Mr. Max Medina –
Teacher at Chilton. Interesting character. Passionate about his teaching of Shakespeare and his students. He is able to keep his cool even when clearly
take aback by Lorelei’s ranting about the test.
We
also have many returning characters.
Back with us is Tristan Dugrey… still a huge jerk. Still calling Rory “Mary”.
Lane
and Mrs. Kim are back and flustered by a sale at the antique store.
Luke
– Still not really getting him. In this episode he is compassionate to Rory and
brings her pie, but still stand-offish.
Paris
is truly savage! She really is the original “Mean Girl.”
Fashion
Noting Lorelei’s
red jacket… This is not the most flattering choice.
What’s with the
animal print? Lorelei wears that grey and purple top and the purple boots and
later has on a leopard print top. At the end,
she has the purple leather skirt. Very fashion forward that Lorelei!
The B-52’s
t-shirt is an interesting piece.
She tells Max that it is not hers, that she spilled coffee on herself
and it was in the car. If it’s not hers,
then whose? Rory? Doubtful, totally not her style!
We see the girls
in class wearing the plaid scrunci’s! And, sadly I admit, I rocked the girly
bandana in the late 90’s early 00’s and was rarely without a scrunci myself.
Sets
I
was a bit surprised that a town as small as Stars Hallow has a dedicated
Stationary store, but here we are.
Wasn’t
there a step up into the kitchen in the Girls home? The home is evolving!
The
Antique store is funny labyrinth inside! I love that Rory and Lane have to use
Marco-Polo to find each other.
Pop Culture
My favorite is Drella playing Iron Man by Black Sabbath
on the harp! She could totally come to any party of mine and play rock on the harp!
Here are more:
- McDonald’s - Would you like fries with that?
- Chevalier
- Black Sabbath, Iron Man
- Steely Dan, Boston & Queen
- Arty Shaw
- Joan of Arc
- Scrunci
- Saved by the Bell
- Bard with a beard
- Scotch Tape Store
- Pat Benatar
- Il Duce –A Mussolini reference? Gloves are off Headmaster Charleston!
- Gaucho Pants
- Flashdance
Quotes
Drella: “I wonder
if Versace makes a pacifier?”
Lorelei: as she
crashes into the globe “What in the world?”
Chilton Dad: “It’s
a test. What is exciting about a test?”
Lorelei: “Do you
play golf?”
Dad: “Yes”
Lorelei: “You
explain yours and I’ll explain mine”
Mr. Medina: “I apologize for some of your guests, it’s a tough time of year for some people.”
Lorelei: “The SAT
season?”
Medina: “The
waking hours”
Lorelei: “I hate
it when I'm an idiot and don’t know it.”
Rory: “That’s it?
That’s all my future is worth? One dollar?”
Lorelei: “Well,
you did get a D.”
Drella: “What do
you think about Pat Benatar?”
Lorelei: “Great
idea. Can she play the harp?”
Miscellaneous Comments:
Rory
with all the bags is hysterical!
The
setting of the 3 girls and their diatribe when making fun of Rory for getting
the D on the paper. These girls are quickly moving up in my rank of favorite
characters. Mean? Yes. Funny? Definitely!
Can
we not acknowledge that while the “Magic Risotto” saved Sookie’s mother, she is
still dead? Are we not sad about this?
Harvard.
Again.
Where
the heck is Stars Hallow that they have to take dirt roads to get to Hartford
Connecticut? And Maple Tree Lane… this should be a question in Trivial
Pursuit.
-
What street what Rory on when she was hit by the deer?
I
love Rory’s meltdown when she misses the test! Finally, we see some emotion
that is all her. I think in this moment
we can finally connect with Rory. She defines herself and no longer being a push-over. Go Rory!
Why
can’t we see the face of the critic?? This scene is odd.
I
do like that we are finally getting away from the pig-tails and bandana on
Sookie! And then were back. Seems very childish for this part. Yes, in the kitchen the bandana is
functional, but no more, please.
Lorelei’s
Phone: Huge grey flip phone. Brick style.
Final Thoughts
Maid Count: with
the absence of Richard and Emily, we are still at 6.
Overall I would
give this a 4.5 out of 5 Rockin’ Harpists
This
episode is fantastic on so many different levels. I love the rock music on the harp and the
Rory meltdown!
No
Emily and Richard in this, so that is sad. Other than the ice cream drama,
Lorelei is much better here.
