Rory’s Dance - Season 1, Episode 9

A dance? Bring on episode 9!

  1. Friday Dinner
  2. Emily is in the know about Chilton, shocker.
  3. Coke in the Gilmore home seems odd.
  4. Rory and Lorelei have the most actuate definitions of school dances ever!
  5. Why is Dean not her boyfriend? Hello, kissing. Repeatedly? Tramp-much?
  6. Gentleman caller??
  7. I love that Lane lives vicariously through Rory.
  8. Rory’s awkwardness with Dean is not cute, it’s painful.
  9. Attack of the dress form!
  10. Jeez Sookie! Drugs for days.  I guess with the injuries she sustains it makes sense.
  11. Emily with the disdain on the thought of Lorelei making the dress.
  12. Well played Emily Gilmore.
  13. Tristan is still gross.
  14. Tristan: “and she’s reading again, how novel.” I love puns!
  15. What on earth makes Tristan think that Rory would go with him?
  16. Paris’s meltdown over Rory. She is equally awkward socially.
  17. Lorelei: “you’re sixteen, you have skin like a baby’s ass, there's nothing to primp.”
  18. I feel you with the heels Rory.
  19. Rory is so oblivious to being lady like. At least she tucked the napkin in.
  20. He’s a guy, will he figure it out??
  21. Emily: “he’s not a very bright boy, is he?”
  22. Lorelei: “Meet my mother, “Emily Post.”
  23. I like that Emily is trying to take care of Lorelei. Better late than never.
  24. Rory is too torn between her two worlds.
  25. First the fuzzy alarm clock and now the funny monkey lamp.  She does have an eye for the Kitschy.
  26. Louise and Madeline are insufferable.
  27. Beautiful room, weird set up though.
  28. Tristan is a pig.
  29. Mashed banana on toast. Hmmm. Pass.
  30. Muscle relaxers, that’s gonna be bad.
  31. Jacob is gross too. What is it with rich kids?
  32. Her Cousin!?
  33. And Rory found her manners.
  34. Aw… Emily! Nice compliment.
  35. Paris is so incredibly intimidated by Rory, it’s sad.
  36. Uh Oh. Boy drama.
  37. At least Dean stood up for Rory. Valiant effort.
  38. Rory, of course Tristan has a thing for you.
  39. Rory: “I just take a book with my everywhere, it’s a habit”
  40. Oh, no Rory… say you didn't!
  41. And Scandal…
  42. Yoga at 5:30am? To much commitment for me.
  43. Running through the snow without shoes. Brrr!
  44. Panic does not look good on the Gilmore women.
  45. Emily’s guilt over her relationship is coming out and it’s not pretty.
  46. Lorelei’s reaction is very honest.

Final Thoughts
No maid count and no Kirk this time. No Richard either.  I miss him.

This episode started out so good! The struggle with Lorelei and the other life that she ran from and tried to keep Rory from and the need for Emily to drag Rory into it.  Rory is classically caught in the middle.  Her awkwardness with Dean is getting old though. Dean is getting better, with each episode.  He truly does care for Rory, that’s obvious.  The episode has wonderful dialogue and ends up very honest.  Both Emily and Lorelei’s reactions when Rory is missing are very real.  They lash out and guilt on both sides is evident.  Rory is caught in the middle again, and reacts honestly for a teenage girl.  As a girl who stayed out her fair share as a teen I can relate to Rory, but as a mom I also relate to Lorelei.  This is a timeless battle between mother and daughter. Life is sticky. It’s hard to watch, but it is classic.

I give this 4 out of 5 mashed bananas. Painful, but accurate.

  1. This is one of my favorite episodes. I love that Emily's reaction to Rory being missing momentarily had Lorelei in the same head space and then ultimately came around. These women are related and the instincts are there. I think the writing is brilliant. I love all the small moments between Lorelei and Emily throughout the series.
